World War I Heroes Monument

The monument stands at the entrance to Făcăieni village, next to the DN1A road, at the junction linking Valea Largă (Măneciu-Ungureni) with Făcăieni. Parallelepiped-shaped, it impresses through its sobriety. Its marble plaques read "Mircea Regiment No. 32, sleepless sentinel at the border of its Country" and "In the footsteps of the great Michael, the road to our brothers".

It was raised by the soldiers of Mircea Regiment No. 32 themselves, stationed here from 29 August 1915 until 15 August 1916, when the unit crossed the Carpathians. During those months they trained on the surrounding hills and mountains and enjoyed the hospitality of the villagers; the monument was their gift in return, paid for out of one day's wages of the officers, non-commissioned officers and soldiers.

It was inaugurated on 10 May 1916 in the presence of villagers and local authorities. In 1975 four marble plaques were added, carrying the names of 95 heroes of Măneciu-Ungureni fallen in World War I. The regiment later fought at Mărășești, where it became known for the "attack of the white shirts".
